Oversize-Overweight Application Checklist

All pilot escorts must 1st get a safety inspection at a port of entry before entering NM with your load.

DO NOT GO INTO THE STATE WITH YOUR LOAD! BIG FINES FOR THE DRIVER!

Cost is $ 10, inspections are good for the term of your insurance coverage.

Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required
On all highways:
Over 8'6" wide, if deemed a hazard-1 pilot vehicle
Over 14' wide-1 pilot vehicle in front on 2 lanes, in rear on 4 lanes
Over 20' wide for 5 or more miles-police escort + flagman
Over 90' up to 110' long-1 pilot vehicle in front on 2 lanes, in rear on 4 lanes
Over 110' long-2 pilot vehicles (front & rear).
Height 16' & over-1 escort with height pole in front (+ extra man or pilot vehicle to check for overhead clearance)
Height 18’ & over-1 escort with height pole in front, 1 pilot vehicle in rear (+ clearance from utilities, municipal & local authorities)
Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
General: Must be inspected by DOT on an annual basis and show certification at all NMPOE. Wheelbase at least 100”; must not exceed 1 ton capacity; 
insurance in the amount 25/50/10 min. (proof must be carried in vehicle)
Signs: “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign (5’ x 1’ min.) w/ black letters (10” x 1”) on yellow background; mounted on front and rear or top of vehicle
Lights: 2 rotating amber lights (rotating,flashing or strobe)on top the vehicle at vehicle width or at width not to exceed 8’;
sufficient intensity to be visible at a distance of  1000’ min. in normal sunlight
Flags: 2 red/fluorescent orange flags (min. 12”  on any side); mounted on front & rear or top of vehicle
Additional equipment: 2-way radio; rear view mirrors on right/left of vehicle; 1 fire extinguisher (2 lb. carbon dioxide or dry chemical or other types equal or 
greater extinguishing capacities); identification sign displaying the name, address and state corporation commission or public regulation commission authority 
number on both sides of the vehicle. This information may be displayed using removable, magnetic signs; 3 red flares/reflectors;

EXEMPTIONS
Transporting poles, logs, timbers or metal in a case in which the load is not readily divisible and such overhang does not interfere with steering the vehicle or if the vehicle is an emergency fire fighting vehicle. A vehicle transporting loose hay or fodder may be driven on the ways of this state when the overall width including load is more than 8'6" provided the excess over 8'6" is solely due to the loose hay or fodder

PERMITS VALID FOR:
Single trip permits are valid for three (3) consecutive days.

OPERATING TIME
Sunrise to sunset, if overweight only continuous travel is allowed, loads not exceeding 12' wide, 15' high and/or 120,000 lbs will also be granted continuous travel but must be requested.

WEEKEND TRAVEL
Saturday sunrise to sunset, no Sunday travel

DIVISIBLE LOADS
A permit will not be issued for reducible loads, loads that can be shifted to make them legal or loads that can be transferred to other trailers or equipment that will make them legal. The disassembling of a load into legal dimensions, then moving the load in multiple truck/trailers may be required.

EXCEPTIONS
Blades, buckets etc may be hauled intact provided they are blocked and angled at the highest possible sitting and width must be minimized.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL PERMIT
Load description, destination, routes, shipper and consignee, year make, unit number, number of axles on the truck and truck and trailer license number, if it is a mobile home the serial number is required; if overweight need axle spacings and axle weights and if self-propelled need tire sizes.

-U.S. 70 from Ruidoso Downs to Hondo
-U.S. 380 from San Antonio to Hondo
-U.S. 285 from Lamy Junction to Clines Corners
-S.R. 4 from 5.5 miles east of San Ysidro to S.R. 502
-U.S. 68 from Velarde to Taos
-S.R. 522 from Arroyo Hondo to Questa
-U.S. 84 from Abiquiu to Chama
-S.R. 12 from Datil to JCT with U.S. 180
-U.S. 180 from Silver City to JCT with S.R. 12
Width over 12' - escort required on all loads on the following highways:
-S.R. 152 from Central to Hillsboro
-U.S. 82 from Alamogordo to Hope
-U.S. 64 from Taos to Cimarron

If continuous movements is specifically allowed by the state for an O/O vehicle, a rear escort must be used for movement at night and a front escort is also required at night if on undivided roads and highways
TYPES OF ESCORTS TO BE USED:
Permittee shall furnish non-police escort and be responsible to see that escort is authorized and qualified to perform such service. Permittee or owner of O/O load may furnish his own escorts and drivers which shall meet all requirements
State Police Escort is required for move all loads w/width of 20' or more for a distance of 5 miles or more and for any other move that is specified on permit (need at least 24 hour notice and cost is $300/day or portion of a day)

**Escorts must be certified, ** NM escorts add on 6 % sales tax to escort bills
**No convoys allowed unless authorized on permit
**Single escort @ rear on multi-lane, @ front on 2-lane highwa

Restricted Travel
Time and restrictions can be determined by each city, contact individual city for specific restrictions. No travel allowed during inclement weather. Inclement weather may include ice and snow covered highways, rain, snow, fog, smog, sleet or dust. High winds causing dust or wind-force sufficient to cause the load to sway or to fail to follow substantially in the path of the towing vehicle. Poor visibility caused by any condition which reduces visibility to less than 1,000'. Vehicle may have to pull off the road to allow traffic to pass from behind an oversize or overweight permitted move. Travel in convoys is prohibited. Vehicles traveling under oversize permit authority requiring an escort requires that each load must have an individual escort.

Overweight, Oversized & Wide Load Super Loads

Loads in excess of routine issue limits shall submit an application including sketches, axle weights and spacings to the state. For loads 20' wide contact State Police, 16' high loads needs a written route survey, over 18' high contact the utility company, loads of 190' long or greater and over, 200,000 lbs contact the Highway Department. Requires 1 to 2 weeks in advance to process request.
