Lights: Revolving (or 2 2-way flashing) amber lights at least 4” in diameter
Flags: Bright red or orange flags; 12” square min.; mounted on brackets or standards on each side of the signs.

*No maximum is set, it is based on axle spacings and routes, each load is examined individually to determine if permit will be issued.
Length: No maximum established, depends on vehicle configurations and whether routes can handle the length.

Height: Depends on routes, all vertical clearances are the responsibility of the permit holder.

PERMITS VALID FOR:
Single trip permits are valid for three (3) travel days.

OPERATING TIME
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, loads not exceeding 10' wide, 14'6" high may travel on interstate highways continuously, loads just overweight may operate 24 hours, 7 days a week.

WEEKEND TRAVEL
Saturday and Sunday, one-half before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

DIVISIBLE LOADS
No permit may be issued for movement of a load that could be readily reduced in size or weight.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL PERMIT
Name of carrier, permit holder, tractor unit number, tractor state and license number, VIN number, date, bill of lading number, cargo and special interest items.

When Escorts are Needed: #Escorts
On State Highways:
Width over 20' 1 (Front if 2-lane, rear if multi-lane)
On Interstate:
Width over 16; 1 Rear
On All Highways:
May be required by permit for the limitations, traffic conditions or unusual permit vehicle configuration Earthmoving equipment moved singly or in convoy, rear of the unit or convoy must also have a sign. (When moving on interstate, escort must immediately follow unit or convoy and sign must be visible from the rear)
In Black Hills Area on state highways, except on US16 from Rapid City to Keystone, WY & US18:
Width over 10' 1 Front
  (A local state trooper may waive front escort requirement for specified time period on any section of state highway in Black Hills area if highway has adequate geometrics for safe operation of move)
Black Hills area includes: (Call ahead 605-698-3925) South & West of I-90 from WY state line to Rapid City West of State Trunk Hwy 79 from Rapid City to Jct of State Truck Hwy 79 & US18 West of US18 from Jct of State Truck Hwy 79 and US Hwy 18 to OelrichsWest of US Hwy 385 from Oelrichs to the NE state line

*Note: State highway system allows wider loads to move without escorts than the federal interstate system in South Dakota.

For load with excessive height and weight, # of escorts depends strictly on specific routes, (clearances are ultimately the responsibility of permittee)
Special Traffic handling:
  A lane at least 10' wide must be allowed for normal traffic to pass an over wide load Special handling required if load extends more than 2' into adjacent driving or passing lane or if load width does not allow normal traffic to pass unless either vehicle drive on the shoulder Special handling includes escorts and flag person located in front or rear of vehicle or both or as required by permit.

Restricted Travel
Travel is restricted in congested areas during high volume traffic periods

Overweight, Oversized & Wide Load Super Loads
Application for a super load permit must contain the following: axle spacings, the number of tires, weight of each axle and routes desired to travel. Applications can usually be processed in one day. 

(FYI, the Pilot car database at AllPilotCars cannot be searched, printed, copied, etc, it is all protected content. The State rules above, can be printed.
