Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Signs:“OVERSIZE LOAD” sign (bumper or roof mounted) w/ black letters (10” high x 1 1/2” brush stroke) on yellow background visible from front & rear;
made from metal or durable wood or cloth or heavy canvas (if they can be securely fastened to the vehicle with a flat surface backing up the entire area of the sign.
Lights: Rotating or strobe type amber light visible from 500’; horizontal placement visible 360 degrees
Flags: 2 red/fluorescent orange flags; 18” square min.; mounted at 40-70 degree angle on vehicle’s roof rack
Additional equipment: 2-way electronic communication; 2-5lb. Fire extinguishers; “STOP”/”GO” paddle (18” w/ 6” letters);
Safety orange vest/shirt/jacket; hand-held red flag (18” square); 2 “OVERSIZE LOAD” banners (black letters on yellow background);
hard hat; reflecting triangles or 18” traffic cones Recommended (not required): hand-held 2-way electronic communications; flares; maps; height pole

PERMITS VALID FOR:
Single trip permits are issued for six (6) travel days.
One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, Monday through Saturday, loads that are overweight only may get continuous travel 24 hours 7 days a week.
Saturday sunrise to sunset, no travel on Sunday.
Permits will be granted to vehicles that cannot reasonably be dismantled or reduced to the lowest possible form, permits not issued for divisible loads.
Equipment such as bulldozers with blades or other protruding sharp objects of any kind which create an over width exceeding 10'6" but not exceeding 13'6" will be loaded in such a manner to place the blade or protruding sharp object to the rear of the hauling equipment. No permit will be issued for blades or protruding sharp objects creating width in excess of 13'6". Blades and booms if they can be removed should be shipped separately.
INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL
Name and address of applicant, load description, method of moving, overall dimensions, spacings of axles, origin, destination, routes, proposed effective date and address to which permits are to be transmitted and method of transmission. For super heavy and/or extra over dimensional movement, complete and detailed proposal of movement, detailed sketch of vehicle and load, tire size and contact pressures, distance between axles and distribution to axles, overall length, width and height of movement and detailed traffic control proposal.

Application must be made in writing and contain a detailed proposal of movement, detailed sketch of vehicle and load, tire size, axle spacings, axle weights and overall dimensions. Permit valid for six (6) days.
Loads 16' wide and 150,000 lbs must go to the Bridge Department
Allow four (4) days for processing
