Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required
On 2-way, 2-lane highways:

When any part of the load or vehicle extends beyond the left of roadway centerline-1 pilot
Width over 15' up to 16' (frequently)-1 front
On any highway designated by permit-1 or more
Width over 16'-2 (front & rear)
Over 125' long-2 (front & rear)
On multi-lane highways:
Same as 2- lane except when any part of vehicle/load extends beyond the left of the right hand lane.
Mobiles:
Width over 14' (on certain highways) - 1 pilot car
Width over 16’-police/private escort: 1 rear on divided highways; 1 front & 1 rear on non-divided highways
Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
“OVERSIZE LOAD” sign mounted above the roof of the vehicle
Sign must measure 5’ x 12” w/ black letters 10” high (brush stroke width of not less than 1 ”) on a solid yellow/amber background
Bright red or orange flag at least 18” square
2 bright red or orange flags at least 18” square on a short staff mounted on the front bumper (one on each side)
2 amber warning lights mounted on or above the vehicle roof; it shall include a single or multiple pulse strobe light and shall flash, 
pulse or rotate between 30 & 120 times/minute; shall be visible at a distance of 500’ & 360o circumference

A permit will not be issued for a vehicle and load exceeding 100' in overall length when the rear supporting axle or axles are at or near the rear of the load unless the rear support is steerable and steered. If load exceeds any of these dimensions or weights, refer to the section on Super Loads.


PERMITS VALID FOR:
Single trip permits are valid for fourteen (14) consecutive days; may get a return trip if requested at the time of application.

OPERATING TIME
Vehicles that are overweight only, unless specified otherwise in the permit, may operate 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.

If size does not exceed 12'00" wide, 13'06" high or 100'00" long, the vehicle may not be operated: Between 4:00 p.m and 11:00 p.m. on Sunday
Between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m on Friday between the 4th Friday in May and Labor Day
Between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on any holiday* or when Independence Day falls on
Sunday on the following Monday
Between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on the day before any holiday*, except that this restriction does not apply to Independence Day when it falls on a Sunday.

If size is greater than 12'00" wide, 13'06" high or 100'00" long, the vehicle may not be operated: During the hours of darkness
After 4:00 p.m. on Friday between the 4th Friday in May and Labor Day
During the period beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday and continuing until sunrise the following Monday
During the period beginning at 12:00 noon on the day preceding every holiday* and continuing until sunrise the day following every holiday*.

*Holidays with restricted travel times are New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas

WEEKEND TRAVEL

DIVISIBLE LOADS
Permits shall not be issued or valid for the transporting of loads or articles which could reasonably be divided in such a manner as to allow transporting of the loads or articles in two or more loads which would not exceed statutory size and weight limits, nor shall permits be issued or valid for transporting of more than one article if the vehicle and load exceed statutory weight limits. This prohibits, among other things the addition of extra bucket, boom sections and so forth to a load being transported under a permit issued for an overweight vehicle and load.

Property transported under a permit shall be loaded to reduce to a minimum the excess over statutory size or gross weight limitations and oversize vehicles used for transporting loads under a permit shall be reduced to statutory size limitations if practical when being operated without load.

EXCEPTIONS
If reasonably removable it must be removed; if it is part of the equipment it can be hauled with the load as long as it does not cause overweight.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO ORDER A WIDE LOAD, OVERSIZE AND HEAVY HAUL PERMIT
Vehicle type, make, number of axles, license number or VIN, state of registration, empty and loaded weight of both the towing and towed vehicles, load description, number of such articles, total weight of vehicle and load, width, height, length of load towing vehicle, towed vehicle and combined vehicle and load, the number of tires and gross load of each axle, axle spacings, total gross weight of vehicles and load, highways to be used, origin and destination of both the loaded trip and return trip, requested date of movement, number of hours the load will be on the road, name and address of the owner of the power unit, name and address of the insurance company, the policy number and expiration date.

Restricted Travel
If traveling on the Milwaukee expressway greater that legal width, height or length* the vehicle may not be operated (except U.S. Hwy 45 between West Florist Ave and West Hampton Ave and on Interstate 94 between Waukesha line and 108th St.):

Between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday
Between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Friday and Sunday

*Maximum allowed dimensions on the Milwaukee expressway are 11'00" wide, 13'06" high or 100'00" long

SPRING WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Restricted weights on certain highways from mid-March to mid-May

Overweight, Oversized & Wide Load Super Loads
Loads exceeding 16' wide and heavier than 150,000 lbs may incur a fee to cover application review costs; must submit an application including axle weights and spacings; super heavy loads will require diagrams. Approval takes from one day to a week
